To determine the insurance value of a home, when setting up a policy, the insurer will use information such as;  the type of construction and materials used, the square footage, the number of bathrooms, whether or not the basement is finished and whether any special features exist in the home that would alter its value.

When planning a major renovation to the structure or adding an addition to the home, you should contact your broker to confirm you are properly covered, and that there will be no issues in the event of a claim. If it is cosmetic changes you are planning, then it would also be a good idea to advise your broker of the work done and materials used. This will ensure that if an
event were to occur and a claim were to arise, your home will be repaired to the condition it was in prior to the claim occurring, including all updates.

If you are not sure whether a recent upgrade or high value purchase, such as jewellery, will have an impact on your home insurance, a call should be made to your insurance broker.

Whether it’s a new purchase, major renovations, or a few small touch-ups, give me a call and I’d be more than happy to help make sure your home is properly covered.
